New Year's Resolutions for Good Dental Health

Now that 2020 is coming to a close, it's time to start thinking about things you'd like to do differently next year. The new year is a great time to start fresh in establishing healthy habits. Whether you want to improve your tooth brushing habits or finally get around to that dental treatment you've been putting off, the benefits of good oral hygiene and good dental health can be rewarding and motivating. The best way to make sure you stick to your resolution is to take baby steps when achieving them.

Avoid Gum Disease

One way to help prevent gum disease is by brushing and flossing your teeth daily. When you improve your daily dental care routines, you're also improving your health. We recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a quality toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for good plaque removal. Flossing once per day helps remove anything that's stuck between your teeth that your toothbrush can't get. The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months.

Dental Cleaning

It's always a good idea to get a dental cleaning, even if it's not a new year - but it's a great reason to! Plaque builds up around the gum line on your teeth and can cause gum disease and make your breath unpleasant. It's always recommended to schedule a teeth cleaning every six months.

Quit Tobacco

While this one may already be your new year's resolution, quitting tobacco can drastically improve your overall dental health. There are free online programs, support groups, and progress apps that can all help with your journey to quitting tobacco.

Whiten Your Teeth

Many things can discolor your teeth, including tobacco, coffee, wine, and tea. Improving the look of your teeth with whitening can enhance your confidence - allowing you to check off some of your other new year's resolutions. Our office can work with you to schedule a teeth lightening procedure. And in the meantime, quitting tobacco and using a straw can help keep your teeth white.

Restore Your Teeth

If you've been putting off getting some dental work done, like crowns, fillings, or implants, the new year is the perfect time to get those things completed. These procedures can help preserve your teeth's structure, maintain their proper alignment, and prevent more invasive procedures.

Protect Your Teeth

This past year has been abnormal and has caused many people stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders - leading to teeth grinding. Those who have abnormal bites or have teeth that are out of alignment or are missing are especially prone to grinding. Symptoms of teeth grinding while sleeping includes jaw soreness, painful teeth, dull headaches, or fractured tooth surfaces. Wearing a mouthguard can help with teeth grinding, but a dental professional will be able to recommend what's best for you.

Dr. Julie Liberman DDS of Great Neck Dental Care NY proudly serves patients of all ages in the Great Neck area, spanning New Hyde Park, Floral Park, Douglaston, Jericho, Roslyn, etc. Book your checkup today to start your new year off right and maintain good dental health.
