Are Dental Implants Safe For Patients?

Many of us fall victim to neglecting our teeth, either through improper hygiene or simply what our teeth come in contact with throughout the day (food, drinks, smoke, etc.). On the other hand, sometimes life just hands us a bad lemon and we suffer damage to our teeth.

Whatever the case may be, it’s going to be difficult to go through life without needing dental work. In some cases, your dentist may suggest dental implants to replace any missing teeth. This might scare some patients that are concerned about the price and safety of the procedure.

The reality is, there isn’t much to be concerned about when getting dental implants. It sounds quite gruesome, knowing that you will essentially have metal fused to your jaw bone, but these surgeries have a 95% success rate -- assuming your dentist is licensed and experienced.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants will actually bring you quite a few benefits over other methods of replacing teeth, including bridges and dentures. Although they will be the more expensive option of the three, they say “you get what you pay for” for a reason.

Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of dental implants:

  • Will completely replace any missing, damaged, or infected tooth
  • Implants are fused to the jaw bone, providing the same stability as a real tooth
  • Risk of bone loss will be reduced
  • Don’t require the day-to-day hustle that dentures provide
  • The surrounding teeth don’t need to be cut down or shaped
  • No restrictions when eating/drinking
  • Are designed to last a lifetime with minor adjustments here and there
  • Allow the patient to return to normal eating and chewing habits

In addition to functioning how a normal tooth should, dental implants will also resemble a real tooth’s appearance. This will help make your smile more uniform than what a bridge or denture provides.

Risks of Dental Implants

Much with any other surgery, there are some risks involved when undergoing dental implant surgery. This is not to worry, however, as the risks are nothing outside the rare complications that can occur in any surgery.

This can include the following:

  • Damage to the surrounding teeth, nerves, and blood vessels
  • Rejection of the implant
  • Infection
  • Issues with your sinuses
  • Potential allergies from thematerials used

As I mentioned above, these risks can be prevented by seeing an experienced and licensed dental surgeon. Most dentists use titanium for its durability and ability to fight corrosion.

Are Dental Implants Right For You?

If you are able to undergo the typical dental procedure with your dentist, then you will likely be a viable candidate for dental implants. They will often be suggested when patients have missing, decaying, or damaged teeth and should only be avoided when they are too expensive for the patient.

If you are considering dental implants, you have nothing to worry about. It’s a common procedure these days and will set up your teeth for a healthier future. Plus, you’ll get the pleasure of having a normal smile and bite again!
